The 'olive branch' that ought to cross the wall
The autumn olive harvest used to be a time of celebration in this West Bank village. Entire families would spend days together in the groves. Even Israelis would make special trips here at this time of year to buy our olive oil. But with new Israeli restrictions on access to the fields, Palestinian farmers now have to leave their families at home, and may never even get to their olive grove. Today, picking olives is no celebration.

West Bank barrier has made Bethlehem a 'giant prison': Jerusalem patriarch
"The wall makes Bethlehem a giant prison," Michel Sabbah said Tuesday in his annual Christmas message at the patriarchate in Jerusalem's Old City. Sabbah, who is to attend the midnight mass at Saint Catherine's Church in Bethlehem on Friday, slammed the so-called separation barrier, saying it would not protect the Jewish state or provide secure borders.

Medical neglect in Israeli prisons, execution without Guillotine
A report published by the Palestinian Prisoners' society revealed that there are at least 950 political prisoners in Israeli detention camps and prisons, suffering of serious medical diseases while prison authorities are not providing them with the needed medication or treatment.

UN school shelters 600 Gaza families displaced by Israeli offensive
Following a two-day offensive by Israeli forces into the Khan Younis refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, the main United Nations agency helping Palestinian refugees has opened one of its schools to provide temporary accommodation to 600 families displaced by the fighting.

Army to Hand Megiddo Detention Center to Prison Service
As a step towards handing over all military detention camps to the Israeli Prison service authority, army is planning to hand over Megiddo prison, with its 1,200 Palestinian prisoners soon. Israeli sources estimate the number of Palestinian detainees under army custody to be around 3,500.

Israel imposes closure on Gaza coastal road
Several Israeli bulldozers rushed in the morning from the settlement of Netsarim in southern Gaza city and bulldozed parts of the coastal road, forming hills of sands, the sources said. The closure was imposed without an advance announcement, which prevented residents from passing through the road from the Gaza city to the southern Gaza Strip and vice versa

Photographer for French TV denied press card for `security considerations'
The Government Press Office (GPO) has refused to issue a press card to a photographer for the French television station FT1 because of "security considerations." The photographer, Jamil Kadamani, is an Israeli citizen and a resident of East Jerusalem who has had a press card for the past three years.

Italian police to train Palestinian security forces

'Political arrests' in Iraq condemned
The Forum issued a statement received by Aljazeera.net in which it condemned the arrest of notable Iraqi politician Abd Al-Jabbar al-Kubaisi. Al-Kubaisi, who is a leader of the Iraqi National Alliance, was arrested in a Saturday pre-dawn raid by US troops backed by armoured vehicles and helicopters.

More than 20 killed in attack on US base in Iraq, Blair visits Iraq
