report "To exist is to Resist, Eye on the Jordan Valley"
was recently published by MA'AN Development Center and the Grassroots
Palestinian Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign and offers detailed

COMING SOON: THE IDF IN GAZA Prime Minister
Ehud Olmert convened his security cabinet on Wednesday afternoon, to
discuss Israel's response to the ongoing Qassam attacks by
Palestinian factions on towns and communities in the western Negev.
Rather than approve the wide-scale military operation that some
ministers had been advocating, the cabinet authorized the IDF, the
Foreign Ministry and the Justice Ministry to examine the option of
taking punitive action again against the civilian population of Gaza
any time a Qassam is launched or a mortar fired.

Gaza fishermen risk becoming quarry AS Abdullah
Assi tethered his fishing nets on Tuesday, his son Ahmed was tending
to more important repairs, plugging the bullet holes in the hull of
the family's weathered skiff. The damage had been done the night
before after a run-in with the Israeli navy, west of a buoy that
marks the Gaza fishing fleet's de facto outer limit. It is here, at
the apex of a triangle demarcated by the Israeli Defence Force, that
many Gazan fishermen run the gauntlet of patrol boats, risking life
and livelihoods for the lure of waters not fished for years.

Tear
Gas and Sound Grenades replaced with Music and Dancing Bilin
Celebrates: On Friday, September 7th, the villagers of Bil'in were
joined by international and Israeli comrades. Normally they come
together every Friday to express their outrage of the unacceptable
Apartheid Wall. Normally the day is filled with military violence,
tear gas, sound bombs, and billy clubs are common. Once the military
begins to fire gas into the crowds, the non-violent protesters tend
to back off eventually leaving only the Palestinian children throwing
rocks in anger. A mild response in comparison to the rubber coated
steel bullets used against them.

Meron
Rapoport: A victory for the anarchists Anyone
who went to demonstrate in Bil'in knew that he stood more than a
small chance of getting hurt somehow by "his" army: by
clubs, tear gas, rubber bullets. Undoubtedly, there were a few who
sought out this violence, but it also befell those who did not seek
it out. It was part of the deal. The violence that the soldiers and
Border Police officers employed against the Israeli demonstrators on
an average Friday in Bil'in surpassed that used against the settlers
during the entire evacuation of Gush Katif. Nevertheless, a few
hundred Israelis made this trip every Friday, without fail, for the
last two and a half
years. http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/901786.html

Britain's
Prince Edward arrives in Israel for first royal visit in over a
decade Prince Edward, the earl of Wessex and the youngest
son of Queen Elizabeth, arrived in Israel Wednesday, marking the
first royal visit here in more than a decade. But despite his
high-profile four-day tour, the prince's visit has been categorized
as "private" and so the situation remains unchanged: not a
single member of the British royal family has ever been to Israel on
an official visit.
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/901234.html
A
royal insult Prince Edward, the youngest son of Queen
Elizabeth II, is visiting Israel this week as the guest of a
Jewish-Arab youth organization. But, like previous visits by the
royal family here, this one was also defined as 'private.' The
43-year-old prince met with neither the president nor the prime
minister. In the 21st century, there is no diplomatic significance to
royal visits, and princes do not negotiate on behalf of their
governments. But there is symbolic importance in showing respect for
the host country. That is certainly the case when it comes to
Britain, an important power and the largest surviving kingdom.
Britain played a decisive historic role in the Middle East in general
and in Zionism in particular, and wants to take the lead in bringing
about a solution to the Israeli-Arab conflict. Its former prime
minister, Tony Blair, now represents the international community in
its efforts to establish a Palestinian state.

Ignorant
thieves-by Azmi Bishara If the US proceeds on the basis of
the conviction that, after its failure in Iraq and Afghanistan, it
needs to score a success in Lebanon by rolling back the opposition
through the application of international resolutions, and another
success in Palestine by feeding the West Bank and starving Gaza in
the hope of compelling the Palestinians to accept anything Israel
offers, the only thing it will accomplish will be to propel these two
countries to civil war and destruction.

An option that doesn't really exist In the wake
of reports of new negotiations on a permanent status agreement
between Israel and the Palestinians, Prof. Gideon Biger is once again
suggesting the transfer of areas populated today by Israeli Arabs to
the Palestinian state that will arise, in exchange for the transfer
of some of the Jewish settlements in the West Bank to Israeli
sovereignty. This would ensure a Jewish majority in the State of
Israel and increase the area of Jewish settlement in the Land of
Israel. However, when we examine the details of this proposal from a
practical point of view and from the perspective of both
international and Israeli law, it is revealed to be an impractical
and dangerous idea.

is the product of a few dedicated activists with a supportive

model for other student activists to emulate. Bravo to GUPS for this
fitting tribute to a great intellectual and his dispossessed and
