Marooned
This month sees the launch of an initiative - Open Bethlehem - intended to help rescue this town, at least, among all the towns on the West Bank facing isolation and collapse. By spreading word of Bethlehem's surprising calm and the endlessly hospitable spirit that has made pilgrims welcome for centuries, the campaigners hope to encourage visitors to return. There is a particular urgency because Israel's infamous security barrier is near completion, while a ring of expanding Jewish settlements eats into Palestinian territory.

This will be one key to healing the wounds between our people.

Nothing could be heard then in the Arab media, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf region, save the gallant appeals calling for "liberation, closing ranks and unifying the goals in front of the Israeli danger supported by colonialism and its agents" - according to the Arab rhetoric of these times, which was, for all its deficits, and compared with the current catastrophic conditions - the golden age of the Pan-Arabism and overwhelming Pan-national passions.

Let Egypt win
Hamas now holds a double balance of deterrence: military and political, of the sort it never even dreamed of wielding when it signed a cease-fire agreement with the Palestinian Authority. Though "senior IDF officers" are angry at Egypt over its close ties with Hamas and Islamic Jihad, ties that ultimately produced the cease-fire, these officers and the Israeli government should thank Mubarak for every quiet day that passes in which Hamas continues to abide by the cease-fire.
